Buku ini merupakan kumpulan hasil kerjasama penelitian melalui proyek EFForTS (Ecological and Socioeconomic Functions of Tropical Lowland Rainforest Transformation Systems) dan difokuskan sebagai buku yang dapat memberikan informasi mengenai nilai penting dari keanekaragaman hayati serangga dan dampak dari perubahan tata guna lahan terhadap keberadaan serangga. Hasil penelitian dalam buku ini diharapkan dapat menambah pengetahuan ilmiah mengenai ekologi serangga dan dapat digunakan untuk membantu pengambilan keputusan, serta perbaikan manajemen perkebunan yang ramah untuk keanekaragaman hayati, khususnya di perkebunan karet dan kelapa sawit. Pengayaan keanekaragaman hayati dengan memanfaatkan layanan ekosistem serangga (parasitoid, penyerbuk, musuh alami, dan dekomposer) serta penanaman beberapa tanaman buah dan pohon lokal di perkebunan kelapa sawit dinilai dapat menjadi alternatif yang menguntungkan. Selain itu juga merepresentasikan jalan keluar yang baik dari perubahan penggunaan lahan yang memberi pengaruh negatif terhadap keanekaragaman hayati.
Dosen dan Kepala Laboratorium Pengendalian Hayati, Departemen Proteksi Tanaman, Institut Pertanian Bogor (IPB University). Ia dipercaya sebagai Direktur Proyek Kelola Sendang Zoological Society London (ZSL) tahun 2016–2020. Sejak tahun 2018 sampai sekarang menjabat sebagai direktur di Pusat Kajian Sains Keberlanjutan dan Transdisiplin Center for Transdisciplin and Sutainability Sciences (CTSS) serta salah satu counterpart IPB University dalam proyek kerja sama penelitian Indonesia-Jerman yang tergabung dalam Ecological and Socioeconomic Functions of Tropical Lowland Rainforest Transformation Systems (EFForTS) (Sumatra, Indonesia). Ia menyelesaikan studi S-1 bidang Hama dan Penyakit Tanaman di IPB pada 1984, S-2 bidang Entomologi di Universitas Illinois, AS, pada 1989, S-3 bidang Ekologi, Evolusi, dan Perilaku di Universitas Indiana, AS, pada 1993.
