Synopsis

Tumbuhan obat merupakan sumber yang sangat potensial untuk menghasilkan obat-obatan modern. Studi tentang pemanfaatan tumbuh-tumbuhan oleh masyarakat tradisional yang kemudian dilanjutkan dengan pemeriksaan fitokimia, uji pra-klinis dan uji klinis, merupakan pendekatan penting untuk menemukan dan mengembangkan obat obatan baru dari sumber obat tradisional. Kayu Ular (Strychnos ligustrina) adalah obat tradisional andalan masyarakat asli di Pulau Timor untuk mengobati penyakit malaria. Pamor tumbuhan ini sebagai obat antimalaria diketahui secara luas oleh masyarakat. Untuk mengembangkan Kayu Ular ini menjadi obat antimalaria modern, maka telah dilakukan beberapa penelitian ilmiah untuk menguji kembali apakah tumbuhan ini benar berkhasiat, mengandung senyawa aktif antimalaria, dan aman untuk dikonsumsi. Buku ini merupakan kompilasi dari serangkaian hasil penelitian yang telah penulis lakukan atas tumbuhan Kayu Ular ini, yang mencakup aspek pemanfaatan tumbuhan ini sebagai obat tradisional antimalaria oleh masyarakat asli di Pulau Timor (etnomedisin), pemeriksaan kandungan kimia, pengujian aktivitas antimalaria secara in vivo dan in vitro, dan pengujian toksisitas ekstrak tumbuhan Kayu Ular ini. Semoga buku ini dapat memperkaya pengetahuan pembaca sekalian tentang potensi dan keamanan tumbuhan Kayu Ular sebagai obat antimalaria, dan prospek pengembangan ekstrak atau senyawa aktif dari tumbuhan ini menjadi calon obat antimalaria yang baru.

Author Biography

Maximus M. Taek, Universitas Katolik Widya Mandira

Maximus M. Taek lahir di Halilulik, Kabupaten Belu, pada 13 Mei 1972. Pendidikan sekolah dasar dan menengah ditempuh di SD Katolik Santo Yakobus Halilulik tahun 1979–1985, SMP Katolik Hati Tersuci Maria (HTM) Halilulik tahun 1985–1988, dan SMA Negeri Atambua tahun 1988–1991. Penulis menempuh pendidikan sarjana pada Program Studi Pendidikan Kimia di Universitas Nusa Cendana, Kupang tahun 1993–1998. Pendidikan pascasarjana magister dan doktoral di bidang ilmu Kimia Bahan Alam ditempuh tahun 2004–2006 dan 2014–2020 pada Program Studi Ilmu Farmasi, Fakultas Farmasi Universitas Airlangga.

Sebelum menerbitkan buku ini, penulis telah lebih dahulu menghasilkan satu buku pertama dengan judul Etnomedisin: Pengobatan Tradisional Penakit Malaria Masyarakat Tetun di  Timor Barat yang diterbitkan pada tahun 2020. Selain kedua buku ini, penulis juga telah menulis beberapa artikel ilmiah yang diterbitkan di jurnal internasional dan prosiding seminar nasional dan internasional. Artikel-artikel ilmiah yang dibawakan dalam seminar internasional, antara lain “Plants in Ai Tahan, Traditional Medicine of the Tetun Ethnic Communities in West Timor, Indonesia” (dipresentasikan pada The 7th Annual Basic Science International Conference di Universitas Brawijaya, Malang, 2017) dan “Ethnomedicinal Plants Used for the Treatment of Malaria in Malaka, West Timor” (International Symposium on Natural Medicines di IPB, Bogor, 2017). Beberapa artikel yang diterbitkan di jurnal-jurnal internasional terindeks Scopus dan Web of Science, antara lain “Plants Used in Traditional Medicine for Treatment of Malaria by Tetun Ethnic People in West Timor, Indonesia” (Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine, 2018); “Ethnomedicine of the Tetun Ethnic People in West Timor, Indonesia: Philosophy and Practice in the Treatment of Malaria” (Integrative Medicine Research, 2019); dan “Antiplasmodial Activity and Phytochemical Constituents of the Selected Antimalarial Plants Used by Native People in West Timor, Indonesia” (Turkish Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 2021).

Saat ini penulis bekerja sebagai dosen tetap pada Fakultas MIPA Universitas Katolik (Unika) Widya Mandira, Kupang. Penulis mengampu matakuliah kelompok kimia organik, antara lain Kimia Organik Dasar, Kimia Organik Bahan Alam, dan Metode Fitokimia.
