Synopsis

Indonesia merupakan negara yang sangat kaya akan keanekaragaman jenis dan memiliki tingkat endemisitas herpetofauna (amfibi dan reptil) yang tinggi. Hal ini disebabkan oleh iklim tropis yang hangat dan lembab serta letak geografis di antara dua zona biogeografi Asia dan Australia. Meskipun begitu, keberadaan amfibi dan reptil di Indonesia masih belum dikenal luas oleh masyarakat. Herpetofauna seringkali diidentikkan dengan pandangan negatif sebagai hewan yang menjijikkan dan berbahaya. Padahal, hewan-hewan tersebut memiliki nilai ekonomi yang tinggi, bahkan reptil merupakan penyumbang devisa terbesar kedua di antara komoditas
tumbuhan dan satwa liar setelah Sonokeling. Herpetofauna banyak dimanfaatkan untuk konsumsi, bahan obat, aksesoris, maupun sebagai hewan peliharaan.

Orasi ini  menyampaikan perkembangan ilmu sistematika herpetofauna (amfibi dan reptil), nilai penting penemuan jenis baru, dan identifikasi jenis dalam penentuan status konservasi.  Kekayaan kehati amfibi dan reptil juga telah memberikan nilai kemanfaatan secara ekonomi dengan pilar pemanfaatan yang lestari, legal dan tertelusur, seperti yang telah diatur dalam konvensi internasional perdagangan flora fauna dunia (CITES). Ilmu sistematika yang berkembang saat ini telah memberikan kesempatan yang lebih baik untuk mengungkapkan jenis fauna baru secara lebih cepat dan akurat, yang akan membantu percepatan pengungkapan potensi keanekaragaman hayati (Kehati) Indonesia.
