The Bugs of Jambi: Insights from a Hemiptera Collection in the Lowlands of Sumatra, Indonesia

Tropical rainforest canopies in Sumatra harbor vast, yet largely undocumented, biodiversity. While studies on vertebrates have guided regional land management, insects-especially canopy-dwelling Hemiptera-remain critically understudied despite playing vital ecological roles as pollinators, herbivores, predators, and prey.

Hemiptera in the Canopy of Lowland Rainforest and Agroforest Systems in Jambi, Sumatra presents a photographic and taxonomic overview of Hemiptera collected via canopy fogging across rainforests, jungle rubber, and monoculture plantations in Jambi Province. Focusing on two major suborders, Heteroptera (true bugs) and Auchenorrhyncha (cicadas, leafhoppers, treehoppers, planthoppers, and spittlebugs), this book documents nearly 400 morphospecies across 33 families with detailed habitat distribution records and high-resolution imagery.

Developed under the collaborative Indonesian-German EFForTS project, this book bridges a significant taxonomic gap in tropical entomology. It serves as an essential identification guide and scientific baseline for entomologists, ecologists, agricultural scientists, and students dedicated to insect conservation and biodiversity research in Southeast Asia.
