Synopsis

Ekologi vegetasi dapat diartikan sebagai kajian tentang vegetasi (komunitas tumbuhan). Di Eropa daratan kajian tentang vegetasi dikenal dengan berbagai istilah, yang pada dasamya adalah sosiologi tumbuhan (fitososiologi) dengan tujuan akhir mengklasifikasi vegetasi menjadi berbagai satuan. Di Inggris dan Amerika Serikat (Anglo-Amerika), kajian tentang vegetasi terfokus pada hubungan antara vegetasi dan faktor lingkungannya, dan dikenal dengan istilah sinekologi. Integrasi antara konsep dan metode penelitian Eropa daratan dan Anglo­Amerika itu menghasilkan kajian ekologi vegetasi yang disajikan dalam buku ini. 
Dalam kajian ekologi vegetasi, kedua metode itu dapat diterapkan secara terpadu dan saling melengkapi. Ekologi vegetasi mencakup kajian tentang variasi vegetasi sehubungan dengan sebaran geografi dan kajian tentang perkembangan perubahan dan stabilitas vegetasi dalam konteks waktu. Penelitian ekologi vegetasi dapat mencakup kawasan berskala besar, misalnya bumi, hingga berskala sangat kecil, misalnya petak vegetasi berukuran 1 m2 Dengan demikian, kajian ekologi menghasilkan data tentang klasifikasi vegetasi dan faktor-faktor lingkungan penyebabnya secara terpadu. Data vegetasi dihimpun tidak hanya bagi keperluan ilmiah semata, tetapi juga untuk berbagai tujuan praktis, seperti pemanfaatan dan konservasi keanekaragaman hayati dan sumber daya alam lain. Bagi para mahasiswa, pengajar dan pakar, buku ini dapat menjadi inspirasi dan landasan untuk penelitian vegetasi.
