Secara ringkas, buku ini mengajak kita untuk mengetahui salah satu dari 19 cagar biosfer di Indonesia saat ini, dan juga termasuk dari empat cagar biosfer tertua di Indonesia. Buku ini dapat dianggap yang pertama terkait penelitian yang komprehensif menyangkut keragaman vegetasi alami di salah satu cagar biosfer yang telah dikukuhkan oleh UNESCO.
Cagar biosfer Cibodas ini bersama tiga cagar lainnya, yaitu CB Komodo, CB Tanjung Puting, dan CB Lore Lindu, merupakan yang tertua di Indonesia karena dikukuhkan pada Tahun 1977 oleh UNESCO. Buku ini memuat pertelaan naratif–kualitatif tentang fakta-fakta yang diuraikan oleh para peneliti pada masa ekologi kualitatif sebelum Perang Dunia II dan penelitian era setelahnya serta penelitian yang diperlukan di masa mendatang dikaitkan dengan perkembangan teknologi masa kini.
Kuswata Kartawinata saat ini merupakan Research Associate pada The Integrative Research Center, Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago, USA, khususnya meneliti hutan tropik dan taksonomi tumbuhan Indonesia (1992–sekarang). Ia pernah menjabat Kepala Herbarium Bogoriense, Lembaga Biologi Nasional, Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI), Bogor (1978–1984). Ia bergabung dengan Herbarium Bogoriense pada tahun 1959 dan telah berpengalaman menelaah lebih dari 50 tahun ekologi tumbuhan dan taksonomi. Ia juga pernah menjabat beberapa posisi, termasuk Tropical Forest Biology Program Manager at the SEAMEO-BIOTROP (Regional Center for Tropical Biology) di Bogor (1972–1975); Program Specialist in Ecological Sciences at UNESCO-ROSTSEA (Regional Office for Science and Technology for Southeast Asia) di Jakarta untuk mengelola program the Man and the Biosphere (MAB), termasuk konservasi keanekaragaman hayati di kawasan Asia Tenggara dan Pasifik (1984–1992); Senior Program Officer at the John D. & Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation di Chicago, USA, untuk mengelola program konsevasi keanekaragaman hayati di kawasan Asia dan Pasifik (1992–1998); Director of Malinau Research Forest, Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) di Bogor, untuk mengelola program tentang Forest, Science and Sustainability di Kalimantan Timur (1998–2001). Ia juga pernah menjadi anggota aktif Komite Nasional Man and the Biosphere (MAB) Indonesia (1973–1984) menangani program interaksi antara manusia dan hutan. Ia mengajar dan membimbing mahasiswa S2 & S3 di Program Pascasarjana Biologi, FMIPA, Universitas Indonesia (2000–2017). Enny Sudarmonowati sejak menjadi peneliti LIPI tahun 1986 telah melakukan berbagai penelitian dasar dan aplikasi di lapang mencakup konservasi ex situ berbagai jenis tanaman hutan dan tanaman pertanian untuk pelestarian plasma nutfah, baik di lapang maupun di laboratorium mengombinasikan teknik konvensional dan bioteknologi. Selain konservasi, ia juga melakukan penelitian dan kegiatan pemanfaatan berkelanjutan untuk transfer teknologi ke masyarakat di beberapa daerah di Indonesia. Selain sebagai peneliti, setelah memperoleh gelar Ph.D dari University of Bath-Inggris awal 1991, ia juga aktif sebagai aktivis lingkungan, terutama pada periode 1996 sampai dengan 2011, dengan organisasi internasional dan membentuk LSM lokal dengan program konservasi dan monitoring wildlife, monitoring kualitas air, pendidikan lingkungan, pendampingan masyarakat, dan pengelolaan sampah, serta pemanfaatan berkelanjutan biodiversitas. Ia juga aktif di Komite Nasional MAB Indonesia dimulai sebagai Sekretaris Komite Nasional pada periode 2002–2004 dan tim Ad Hoc revitalisasi Program MAB Indonesia tahun 2003, lalu menjadi Ketua Komite Nasional MAB Indonesia semasa menjadi Deputi Bidang Ilmu Pengetahuan Hayati (IPH) Lembaga Ilmu Pengetahuan Indonesia (LIPI, sekarang BRIN) pada tahun 2014–2019. Pada masa ini, ia sebagai pendorong adanya logo di masing-masing cagar biosfer yang menjadikan CB Cibodas merupakan pionir yang mempunyai logo CB di Indonesia sehingga juga menjadi pionir “branding” produk unggulan yang ramah lingkungan yang disertifikasi lingkup tertentu dengan logo tersebut. Selama menjabat sebagai President ICC MAB (International Coordinating Council Man and Biosphere) UNESCO pada periode 2018–2020, ia sangat aktif mendorong nominasi cagar biosfer baru di Indonesia dan negara lain serta meningkatkan kualitas cagar biosfer yang sudah ada. Selain itu juga menjadi koordinator dan giat melakukan penelitian bekerja sama dengan lembaga dan perguruan tinggi nasional dan internasional, termasuk pendanaan dari UNESCO, UNDP, CIFOR, Bioversity International terkait tanaman hutan terancam punah atau yang bernilai ekonomi tinggi dengan berbagai teknik termasuk menjadi koordinator penelitian menghimpun baseline data berbagai aspek di wilayah calon cagar biosfer, seperti di Giam Siak Kecil- Bukit Batu.
